I hope that by now we can appreciate the convoluted way that weird cars often come about, then die or survive, seemingly on a whim. That saying ‘Lutteral Comahue’ to a certain age of Argentinian should elicit an approving nod, like a secret handshake among enthusiasts, pretty much tells you all you need to know.

A long-lived, genuinely successful and remembered weird car, with its tiny roots tenaciously connected to Pininfarina, Willys, and Renault — plus actual performance and properly zany options, such as a steering wheel, sawed in half, and “digital” gauges?

A thousand times yes.

One of the earliest cars I ever wrote about for my newsletter in 2014 was…the Lutteral Comahue. In subsequent years, I’ve learned to embrace the spirit of this muscular car and adapt the original story for our changing times (and more information).

Let’s begin.
