A curious dynamic has emerged in this day and age: the end of the “bad” Chinese car.

Recently, a Chinese automaker — you may have heard of it — sent its latest and greatest all-electric hypercar to a verified top speed of 496.22 km/h (308 mph)…in the same place Bugatti set its previous world land speed records.

The world’s fastest production car, the BYD Yangwang U9 "Xtreme", is now made in China and has absolutely nothing in common with this weird car…except for three crucial letters: B-Y-D.

Allow me to state the obvious: pretending that China had no ‘history’ as an auto-making nation is the sort of grand hubris that will be dissected for decades to come.

I lived the 2008 Financial Crisis, as did many of you, and I always felt that era of market disruptions, plus the 2007 explosion of the first Apple iPhone — assembled in China — were key steps in rocketing China to the top of the automotive sales charts.

BYD S8, though it says ‘F8’ I promise we’re good — it was first shown at the 2006 Shanghai Motor Show as the F8 • BYD
